What Is a Level 4 Hair Stylist

Develop your creativity and gain expert knowledge and skills. Graduates can pursue a professional career in hairdressing or work in associated beauty industries.

You will use project based learning in a salon environment to prepare to be an emerging stylist in the industry.

Gain knowledge of complex long and short hair styling, hair cutting techniques using scissors, razor and clippers, perming and relaxing techniques, advanced colouring techniques, advanced hair and scalp conditions and treatments and advanced reception skills.

There are two entry dates per year:

Career Opportunities and Outcomes

Graduating with the NZ Certificate in Hairdressing (Emerging Stylist) [Level 4] will open up a wide variety of future opportunities in hairstyling and hair-care. Following completion of the programme you can progress onto the NZ Certificate in Hairdressing (Professional Stylist) [Level 4] or you can enter the dynamic and glamorous world of professional hairstyling. The world will be your oyster and you could end up pursuing a career as:

  • Emerging stylist
  • Salon reception
  • Retail sales
  • Product representative

Outline

The purpose of this qualification is to provide the hairdressing industry with individuals who have obtained sufficient knowledge, practical skills and attitudes to perform salon and client services that contribute to the effective operation of the salon.

This qualification is suitable for those with prior knowledge of salon support and client support services in a hairdressing salon, who wish to develop skills and knowledge towards becoming a hairstylist.

You will use project-based learning in a salon environment to prepare to be an emerging stylist in the industry and as a graduate you will be capable of operating at an intermediate level under broad guidance.

Subject areas include:

  • Complex long and short hair styling
  • Hair cutting techniques using scissors, razor and clippers
  • Perming and relaxing techniques
  • Advanced colouring techniques
  • Advanced hair and scalp conditions and treatments
  • Advanced reception skills

Entry

Entry Criteria

  • Successful completion of the NZ Certificate in Hairdressing (Salon Support) [Level 3].

Health and Professional Criteria

All applicants are required to:

  • Complete a NZ Police Vetting Service Request and Consent form.
  • Sign a declaration that they are in good health (having no medical, physical or psychological conditions that would preclude working with vulnerable clients).

If the declaration identifies any issue that may impact on the applicant's ability to complete the programme, the applicant can discuss these with the Programme Coordinator at an information session. EIT reserves the right to decline entry to the programme should an applicant's police record or health difficulties be such that they would be considered unsuitable for the type of work undertaken whilst on this programme or by graduates of this programme. This decision will be based on relevant professional association or industry requirements.

English Language Entry Requirement

All applicants must demonstrate an acceptable level of English language fluency prior to acceptance in the programme.

For international students, ways in which English language fluency may be demonstrated include the following:

  • Successful study of a programme in which English was the language of instruction (subject to NZQA conditions).
  • Completion of a New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Level 3 with Academic or Applied endorsement).
  • IELTS Academic score of 5.5, with no band score lower than 5, achieved in a single test within the two years preceding enrolment.
  • Accepted international equivalents to the above IELTS scores.

Scholarships

EIT offers a variety of scholarships across various subjects and programme levels.  Some scholarships are based on your age, some are specific to the subject you want to study.  Not all scholarships are based on your academic ability and anyone wanting to study should investigate what scholarships are available to them.

You can find a list of EIT scholarships here however there are many more scholarships offered nationally.  Information about these is on an database called "givME". givME is accessible at EIT or at some public libraries.
