Black Plastic Polish for Cars

How to Permanently Restore Black Plastic Trim

Almost every car will get sun-faded, UV-damaged plastic trim. Without protection, plastic that was originally black will fade to grey. The faded trim will make your car look years older than it is.

Using a plastic restorer to permanently restore black plastic trim is an easy process and a very cost effective way to improve your car's appearance.

What methods are available?

1. Heating/Melting the Plastic with Heat Gun or Torch

This is a short term solution. We don't recommend it because it damages the plastic. Torched plastic will eventually turn grey and dull again, as nothing was done to repair it.

Repeated torching will further damage the plastic, and you will have to replace the plastic trim with a new piece. Depending on the vehicle and the manufacturer, this can be quite costly.

2. Applying a Trim Dressing

This has the shortest life and it's the most time consuming. Dressings look good but wash away after 3-6 weeks. They have to be applied almost every car wash. Most trim dressings will leave stains when the product gets wet and runs down the side of your car.

3. RECOMMENDED: Use Solution Finish Trim Restorer

This is our preferred method. Solution Finish is easy to use, it lasts a long time, and actually works to restore and fix the trim.

How to Permanently Restore Black Plastic Trim in 3 Easy Steps?

  1. Wash the plastic trim. For best results, clean the plastic trim with isopropyl alcohol so there is no residue, only bare plastic.
  2. Use a microfiber applicator or foam applicator to apply Solution Finish Trim Restorer onto the plastic.
  3. Wipe off excess product with a clean towel and allow the plastic to dry for 6 hours.

After the first application your trim will stay black and looking new for approximately 8 or more months. Afterwards, a second application can last even longer, as Solution Finish Black Plastic Restorer works to fix the damaged plastic and not just dress it!

Tips for using Solution Finish:

  • For best results, apply to a clean, cool surface in the shade.
  • Use with adequate ventilation.
  • Solution Finish will stain clothing and skin. Wear gloves and eye protection.
  • Prior to application, use IPA 70-90% (Isopropyl Alcohol) to remove any cleaners, oils or silicones from the plastic.
  • Shake bottle well and apply a small amount to applicator pad or microfiber sponge.
  • Spread a thin coat over area in an even motion, covering area completely.
  • Allow solution to penetrate for 3-4 minutes.
  • Use a clean microfiber towel to buff off excess and wipe off glass and paint.
  • For best results after using Solution Finish, do not wash treated area for 4 to 6 hours.
